Published September 2004 Suitable for teenagers and young adults alike who enjoy books about rebellions, and corporations trying to take over the world.. Book rating: 4.5/5 The book follows a young girl about to turn seventeen named Kayla, with a leading corporation of the Earth known as Global-1. Global-1 controls most of the world, along with most of the food supply. Global-1 genetically engineered cows and other animals to produce more milk, and to grow bigger. As the book goes on, most of the world is known to have bar code tattoos, obtainable at the age seventeen or over, which would give details about you to anyone scanning the bar code. Later it was found in the bar code is your genetic markup, allowing hospitals, insurance companies, and banks to know what diseases may be in your family at birth. There was a disease known as TMP, which basically meant you would do anything to get rid of the tattoo. Kayla went home one day early in bad news that she could not get into a university despite her computer grades, and in this futuristic world, the computer's do most of the graphical work for art designs. Kayla's father had TMP, and had committed suicide becuase of the bar code. Kayla's mother then went insane everyday trying to scrub off the bar code. One day Kayla went to get her bar code, she felt uneasy with the situation, and with her friend Amber runs out of the postal office, which has been under Global-1 control for many years and isa location where one could get the bar code. Shortly after Kayla left, she heard gun fire. Kayla's neighbor, Gene Drake was shot down. Over the news Kayla learned that Drake threatened people getting their bar code, and smashed the machine that gave out the bar code. Kayla got access into her father's bar code file, and it showed the whole genetic mark up of her father. With new information on what happened to her father, she knew Drake did not like what was in the bar code, because he had a friend who helped him hack into the network to see what was in there. Kayla joined a resistance group against the bar code known as Decode, and throughout the book it tells the story of the resisting effects that happened to her and other members of Decode, and their mission on eradicating the Global-1 company that is attempting to control the world with The Bar Code Tattoo. |
